Australia's first Topcon 3D-Xi "indicator" 3D GPS+-based control system for excavators has increased productivity and efficiency by up to 50% on a riverside project for Sydney-based contractor Ford Civil Contracting Pty Ltd.

"We are getting productivity increases of about 50% on the seawall construction, and between 20 and 30% on the other boxing out and shaping activities," said Ford Civil's managing director Stuart Ford. "Those are very real efficiency and productivity gains we are achieving.

According to managing director Leigh Hartog, the use of the System 5+ on the graders and scrapers is saving at least one grader, around 30-40% in costs and a lot of time - plus the entire project is much safer, because there are no stringline or level checking crews on the ground for the operators to look out for.
